India stealing water of our rivers: KC

Nisar Ahmed Thokar
Islamabad, Oct 09: Terming water as backbone for Pakistan’s economy, the Parliamentary Kashmir committee has stated that India was stealing water of the rivers, allocated to Pakistan under the Indus Water Treaty.

“In view of the situation Pakistan should remain vigilant and take appropriate measures to stop India from doing so”, the Kashmir Committee members observed this here in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Moulan Fazl-ur-Rehman. Deliberating on the issues relating to the construction of dams by India in Jammu and Kashmir, the committee, after receiving a detailed briefing from Special Assistant to Prime Minister Kamal Majidullah, directed the concerned authorities to take necessary steps to counter India’s water aggression against the country. According to a statement the Committee was told that India had built quiet a few dams and was in the process of building more dams in the territory. The committee also stressed the need for adapting a coherent policy on the issue rather that wasting time in correspondences and discussions.

“All avenues, including the legal ones, should be explored to compel India to stop construction of these dams, because under the Indus Water Treaty, India cannot steal water of our rivers”, The Committee maintained. The KC also directed that action taken against the negligent officers in the matter should be intimated to the Committee.

Besides the KC Chairman the meeting was attended by Members of the Kashmir Committee, Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, Secretary, Ministry of KA&GB Kamran Qureshi, Additional Secretary Hamid Ali Khan and senior officers of Ministry of KA&GB, Foreign Office and Ministry of Water & Power.
