Zardari visits Siachen to express solidarity with army

Islamabad, Apr 18: To express solidarity with armed forces, Pakistan President, Asif Ali Zardari on Wednesday visited the Gayari sector of Siachen where rescue teams have been struggling hard to trace the trapped soldiers buried under a massive avalanche that swept away the battalion headquarters of Northern Light Infantry (NLI) on April 7.
 Zardari who was accompanied by Chief of the Army Staff, General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani witnessed the ongoing rescue operation in the Gayari sector and received briefing about the search operations going on for last two weeks.
 According to a private news channel the Pak president also took an aerial view of the avalanche, wherein the country lost about 139 people, including 124 servicemen and 11 civilians.
 It may be recalled here that President Zardari was scheduled to visit Siachen on Monday, but due to unfavourable whether conditions he had to cancel his trip to the mountainous region.
